On June 9, Space Engineering School hosted the Second Student Space Tournament Star Track, in which students presented their space research developments and competed for the main prize − an opportunity to implement a practical model of the project.
10 teams took part in the tournament, which included students and graduates of the Physical and Technical Faculty of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, National Technical University "Dnipro Polytechnic", Dnepropetrovsk National University of Railway Transport, College of Rocket and Space Engineering of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.
As a result of the pitching session, the jury identified the winners in each topic:
- CanSat satellites: team "T. S. Industries", "FIRE";
- CanSat carrier rockets: team "Dandelion", "Maximus";
- The research rocket complex: team "DniproSkyLab";
- Freestyle: team "Albatross", "Compo Rocket", "Moon Screen", "Dreamers", "Space Brain".
The winning teams shared the prize fund of 20 000 UAH granted by the Association Noosphere. In addition to financial support, winners will get the opportunity to work on the implementation of their projects under the guidance of the School mentors and consult with experts in the field of start-ups, space technologies, project management etc.
Michael Ryabokon, co-founder of the Noosphere Engineering School, noted that one of the main tasks of such events is the revival of intellectual capital in the field of space research. Michael inspired students, saying that the global goal of the School is to create a platform where students can launch startups and shape the future of the rocket and space industry.
Participants of the tournament presented their developments in 4 categories, surprising spectators with interesting proposals and constructive solutions:
“DniproSkyLab” presented a project of a rocket complex creation for sounding the lower atmosphere in the interests of science and economy. The purpose of the complex is an operative delivery of the payload to a height of 20 km, as well as the preservation of the rocket material part after launch. In addition, the team not only strive to develop experimental rocket science, but also want to improve the skills of future specialists, attracting students and young people to production.
Representatives of “T.S. Industries” and “Fire” made proposals to create a payload − CanSat satellites, whose task is to fix telemetry and shoot during descent to the ground. Both teams paid special attention to the hardware component, as well as the software required for efficient operation of the devices.
The “Moon Screen” team surprised experts with the original presentation on how to use the natural satellite of the Earth, the Moon, as a screen for the projector. The goal of the project is to popularize space, make profit from advertising, and expand the scope of information technology.
Students from the “Maximus” team proposed the optimal design of the rocket for collecting meteorological data, testing the experimental head fairings and conducting research work in general. The participants fulfilled not only the technical task of the tournament, but also showed a detailed plan for further improvement of the project. The dream goal of the team members is the mass production of such rockets.
The team of “Compo Rocket” presented the project of space exploration with a single-stage rocket made of composite material. Today, the specific strength of composites is attractive and rational for use in space research, which makes this development relevant.
Representatives of the “Dandelion” team proposed three projects at once, including a single-stage unguided rocket with an in-line engine (CanSat), a single-stage uncontrolled/guided rocket with an engine of a bearing body type and a two-stage guided rocket with an engine of the bearing body type.
Finally, within the Freestyle category:
- the “Space Brain” team introduced the multipurpose aircraft Aqua AirKos-1, which can perform a vertical take-off and landing in any territories of the Earth;
- Nikita Dotsenko from the team “Albatros” surprised experts with the creative approach to his project presentation − a rocket capable of flying on 15 km;
- and the team "Dreamers"
proposed a project for designing and manufacturing a large-scale model of the
mobile ground-based rocket system "Temp-2MS".
"Star Track is an excellent platform for uniting people whose ideas and developments form the country's space industry. The tournament was attended by both, novice "rocket builders" and specialists with already significant practical experience. Such a partnership motivates young people not to be afraid and to create their own projects," comments Igor Gomilko, head of the Laboratory of Robotics and Electronics at Noosphere Engineering School, Associate Professor of the Radio Electronics Department of at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University, PhD in Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
As the “Fire” team member Artem Girka stated, the more students and pupils will take part in such space contests, the more likely a breakthrough in the design of satellites and rockets will happen, because these initiatives give an opportunity to find effective solutions and help to look at the already established processes in a new way.
Max Polyakov, founder of the Association Noosphere and Noosphere Engineering School emphasized: "The rocket-building industry, unlike the IT sphere, places a higher bar in questions of prototyping and testing of hypotheses. It requires more time, funding and in-depth expertise. Handmade solutions and workarounds well known to IT professionals do not work here. This is the sphere where qualitative indicators are valued more than quantitative ones. That's why I'm pleased to note that projects presented within this year Star Track turned out to be of a higher value than on the previous hackathon. I hope that students who took part in the tournament will not lose interest in space research, and soon will become employees of EOS and Firefly Aerospace, which today delegate their experts to the role of mentors and judges."
